The most important observatories in the Southern Hemisphere are located in Chile due to the idea conditions - low levels of light pollution, clear skies, dry air and stable air flows. In the areas where the large telescopes are located you will scarcely see a cloud in the sky all year!
The ESO (European Southern Observatory) has an array of 8m VLTs (Very Large Telescopes) at Cerro Paranal in the Atacama. Visits to the observatory can be arranged with a couple of months notice. This is the same for the Cerro Tololo observatory above the Elqui Valley. If you would like to see the night sky as you have never seen it and witness the impressive engineering and technology that goes into a state of the art observatory, then just state your interest on the Trip Specification Form.
