Chile is the longest (north to south) country in the world and as you would expect with such a range of latitudes, the best time to visit depends on where you go.
The warmest months are from October through to March and this is the best time to visit if planning to travel to the north and south.
However the low season months (April to September) have their advantages: Torres del Paine, although very cold, is at its most beautiful with a covering of snow and clear sky; there are also fewer people in the national parks and at hot spots like San Pedro de Atacama; and of course accommodation is less expensive.
Seasons & Dates
Ski season is from August to September. Aim for the middle for best snow. Grape harvest or "Vendimia" is during March and April. This is the best time to be in wine country. The hills are in autumn colours and the wine flows freely at harvest festivities. Independence day celebrations are from 18th to 22nd. The whole country stops to celebrate its independence from Spain with much roasting of meat, drinking of wine and traditional dances. Fishing: the trouts are snapping and leaping from December through to end of March.
