San Carlos de Bariloche is at the centre of the Argentinean lake district, a beautiful region of mountains, lakes and forests. The lakeside location of Bariloche is stunning, the scenery is said to have inspired Paul Simon as he wrote Sound of Silence. The Argentinean lake district is a great place for outdoor sports - there is good hiking and fishing in summer and in winter skiing.
Bariloche is often referred to a piece of Switzerland and was in fact settled by many Swiss immigrants. It is no surprise then that the town is also renowned for its fine chocolates. |
Lake Crossing Bariloche is the start point for the lake crossing to Puerto Varas in Chile. The trip can also be done the other way round. The crossing or "Cruce de Lagos" is a great way to make the journey from Argentina to Chile. The crossing takes a full day, setting off from Bariloche across Lago Nahuel Huapi towards the border. There is a short section that needs to be completed by bus before continuing across Lago Todo los Santos in Chile. It is a classic journey through the shimmering green and blue heart of the lake district. |
