San Carlos de Bariloche is at the centre of the Argentinean lake district, a beautiful region of mountains, lakes and forests. The lakeside location of Bariloche is stunning, the scenery is said to have inspired Paul Simon as he wrote Sound of Silence. The Argentinean lake district is a great place for outdoor sports - there is good hiking and fishing in summer and in winter skiing. Bariloche is often referred to a piece of Switzerland and was in fact settled by many Swiss immigrants. It is no surprise then that the town is also renowned for its fine chocolates.
